The Aelfraed Series

The stories in this series follow a young warrior who becomes a housecarl of Harold Godwinson. It chronicles not only the training but the life of a warrior in Wessex. When the young warrior becomes an outlaw he has to flee England and makes his way to the Byzantine emperor, becoming one of his Varangian guards. They travel from the Baltic to the Black Sea and become, not outlaws, but important men. His journey, with his close friend, is an insight into a world that is now lost to us.
